Hence, it felt like there was some sort of disconnect between what the story was about and what the villain actually turned out to be which sort of makes the overarching narrative kind of strange. I suppose trying to combine everything in the universe into one entity is a sort of evolution influenced by outside means, but its very different from what the rest of the major events in the game were related to. However, the main villain, The Missing Procedure and Phantoms didn’t feel like they tied into those themes very well. The general theme of the impact of higher civilizations on lower ones and how that can cause issues with people using power above their means which leads to major issues was conveyed well, and set up the Underdeveloped Civilization Preservation Act pretty well. In this it had some good points but also didn’t do very well on certain points. The story is about the journey of it’s characters as they are exposed to new concepts and events that test their preconceptions more than anything. I should note that I’ve only played Star Ocean: Till the End of Time before this, so this review is from that perspective. Their journey takes them far and wide and they come into contact with many people across the galaxy, but they also discover a great evil that was a threat to all of them, and that they may be the only ones that can stop it. And they also meet Arumat, a skilled Eldarian warrior that had no fear of death nor time to waste on trivial matters. Eventually, they meet Sarah, a very girly and clumsy featherfolk woman who despite having wings was unable to fly. Next they meet Myuria, a sensual woman who had lost her husband and pledged revenge. Then they meet Meracle, a friendly cat like girl in both appearance and behavior who had somehow left her planet and then lost her memory of where she came from. They later meet Bacchus, a very logical minded scientist who had due to a disease ended up swapping most of his body with machinery. Early on they meet Lymle, a girl that looks and acts incredibly young, but is actually a very skilled symbologist. Along their journey they meet a number of interesting people on a number of interesting planets. As a part of this alliance, Edge, Reimi, and Faize, together explore the galaxy on the Calnus. The Elderian’s are also looking for another planet to make their home, and hence ally with Earth. However, upon landing on another planet, they quickly run into trouble, only to be rescued by Faize, an Elderian, and the first contact Edge has with non-Earth sentient beings. On the first mission by the SRF, Edge Maverick departs Earth aboard the Calnus alongside his childhood friend Reimi Saionji and a number of other crew mates. Hence, the Space Reconnaissance Force (SRF) came into being. As a result, the finally united humanity began looking to the stars for a new home. After World War III, Earth was left mostly uninhabitable.
